The "Beckham," I mean Designated Player Rule states that each Major League Soccer team gets one player signing starting in 2007 whose salary will not count towards the somewhat flexible salary cap that all MLS teams have had to operate under since Day One back in 1996.
This signing right can also be traded away, so there will be cases of teams with no "Beckham" signings and others with more than one. This is my listing of those signees as they've been signed. The rule was announced November 2006, and the signees in order of signing:
January 11, 2007: the man they supposedly re-wrote the collective ownership-driven rule book for, David Beckham himself goes Hollywood MLS Press Release, and Posh has already got a reality show lined up on NBC wire report. I wonder where his net worth goes now among the soccer world, and what affect that might have on further high-quality emigrés?
January 24, 2007: Native Son Claudio Reyna returns Stateside to play for Bruce Arena again, this time with Red Bull New York MLS Press Release.
April 1, 2007: US Men's National Team nemesis Cuahtemoc Blanco is set to bring all of the pesky, and more importantly goal-scoring, weapons in his arsenal to the Chicago Fire MLS announcement.
April 17, 2007: 31-year-old Colombian international Juan Pablo Angel leaves Aston Villa in the English Premiership to take the second DP spot for Bruce Arena's RBNY MLS announcement.
August 24, 2007: 30-year-old Brazilian international Dénilson signs with FC Dallas in a free transfer (FC Dallas Add versatile Denilson) .
