Without actually playing another game DC United clinched the Major League Soccer Supporters Shield when Chivas USA lost 2-1 to the Rapids. At the same time, the Rapids keep the pressure on Kansas City and Chicago to get points on the last game-day of the MLS or risk being left out of the Playoffs.

Single Table/DC United supporters, break out the champagne with Chivas USA's win, while those who prefer to emphasize the MLS Cup Final winner prefer to correctly point note that in 11 seasons only 4 times has the Shield winner gone on to win the Cup. (wikipedia reference) [WARNING: The following paragraph is "new to you" if you haven't seen it before, but otherwise is a repeat from a different, earlier version of this column, (Columbus Crew Eliminated, Los Angeles Galaxy Still in the Playoffs Hunt) ] For those few, lonely Crew fans out there in mourning their elimination from the MLS Playoffs, you can turn back the clock sort of and wonder "What if only Chicago would have lost Saturday night to United, like that bonehead Brad predicted?" here (Columbus Crew Eliminated, Los Angeles Galaxy Still in the Playoffs Hunt) (how's that for self-referential) Now the New New 2007 Major League Soccer Playoffs Picture: (accurate as of October 14, all teams have 1 game remaining to play, except the Galaxy who has an extra game in-hand; each team's record over all of their last 5 games and over the last 5 home and/or away games in parentheses, followed by current Goal Differential and Number of Goals Scored)
7. Kansas City Wizards: 37 points (All LTLLW--Away LLTLL)(-2 GD/43 Goals) Remaining schedules: My Best-Guess and Possibly Half-Assed Projected Scenarios: (UPDATED October 14) The Rapids screwed my projections again by winning in Carson tonight, so my track record stands at: 2-3, having also missed the Crew's victory in Gillette Stadium and Chicago's draw in RFK. At least I got the gimmes with the red-hot Galaxy staying hot, and the Wizards remaining consistent away losers. I'll stick with the Crew losing @ DCU to finish with 34 points. LA still has to win vs. New York to get them to 36 points, and still all to play for in their finale in Chicago. Chicago's draw with DC United only eliminates one of their pursuers, Columbus, since the Galaxy always had to win all 3 games to make the playoffs. Though Kansas City lost to the Red Bulls, just like Chicago the Wizards will only need a tie with Dallas to guarantee the playoffs with 38 points. Here's how the tie-breakers would look (in order of their current position in the standings, except the Fire-Galaxy who are yet to play each other for the last time).
